Chapter 19 begins:

“You’d think it unheard of for a complete running book to omit a comprehensive chapter on picking your first and subsequent pairs of running shoes. After all, our original book had a “shoe chapter,” authored by Ned Frederick, Ph.D., of Nike’s Human Performance Laboratory. But, we dropped that chapter for this update because it became apparent at the Honolulu Marathon Clinic that runners were spending a great deal of time selecting running shoes, but spent virtually no time on assessing or picking their running feet. As you will see, this is an unbelievably absurd approach. For example, would you expect a hunter to purchase ammunition before knowing what caliber of gun he’s going to use? Of course not. ”
